Accele is shipping a backup camera with an extra wide lens so that it provides cross traffic detection and shows the driver’s blind spot area as he is backing up.
Accele President Allen Arzoumanian said cross traffic capability is usually achieved via microwave radar, but the new camera is able to achieve it through a wide angle lens. “This is a visual detector with 99.9 percent accuracy,” he said.
The model “sees” a 180 degree view but only shows the user 160 degrees. The other 20 degrees are used to detect pixel motion to determine if there’s a vehicle coming down the lane as you are backing out. You can see a very basic demo of the camera here.
Users get an audible and visual warning.
