Directed introduced at the Connected Car Show at CE Week in New York last week, one of the first aftermarket GPS tracking devices with a starter kill switch for powersports vehicles, it said.

Directed’s Viper SmartStart systems enable users to monitor, lock, unlock, remote start and receive alerts from almost anywhere, said Geoff Weathersby, Directed VP Connected Car. Directed’s new Viper Powersports GPS is designed for vehicles with smaller batteries. The Viper Powersports GPS (VPS450) notifies users if anyone moves or tampers with their vehicle.

The Viper Powersports GPS includes a kill switch that can be mounted in a hidden spot in the vehicle so that even if someone steals your key, they can’t start the vehicle without pressing the switch.

The GPS device has an accelerometer and a tamper-proof backup battery.

Users can track their vehicle through the Directed SmartStart app, where it appears as a separate vehicle, for those using SmartStart already for their car.

The VPS450 module is IP66 rated as dustproof and resistent to water spray.  It is shipping next month at $349. The first year of service is free, with a fee of $99 per year thereafter or $269 for 3 years.
