Sirius XM said it ended 2009 with an additional quarter million net subscribers in the fourth quarter, closing the year with a total of 18,772,758, to be exact.

Mel Karmazin, CEO, said the company also expects to report over $100 million of free cash flow for 2009, compared to a negative pro forma free cash flow of $552 million in 2008.  “This is the first year in our history that we have generated positive free cash flow for the entire year,” said Karmazin claiming that the company has grown its net new subscribers for the past two quarters.  Also, auto sales are improving and Sirius upped slightly its rate of converting subscribers on a free trial to paying subscribers.  In Karmazin’s words; “the outlook for the auto sector and the effects of the economy on our business are beginning to improve. “  We’ll see how many retail subscribers were added or lost when the company presents its full earnings report presumably in the next month or so.

Meanwhile, Sirius is planning to extend its iPhone app to the BlackBerry, according to Orbitcast.
