A new “dashboard tablet” called OverDryve brings crash warning, music and other features to any car.

It also provides navigation, a dash cam plus a high resolution wireless backup camera in a $399 device to ship this spring.

The OverDryve, is from Rand McNally, which makes truck portable navigation devices, but this device is for all cars.  It was announced last week at the Chicago Auto Show.

“The vast majority of the 250 million cars…on the road today don’t have sophisticated electronics—features such as voice recognition and control , hands-free texting and forward collision detection…,” said Rand McNally CEO Stephen Fletcher. “OverDryve upgrades ordinary vehicles by providing an advanced connected-car experience for a fraction of the cost of a high-end luxury car.”

Other features include a voice-controlled smart assistant, handsfree calling and texting, and Audible news, weather, traffic and sports.  The OverDryve also allows customizable gauge clusters and tire pressure monitoring.

It includes a built-in FM radio and connectivity to an in-dash radio (wireless or wired connection). Users can also get roadside assistance.

It also comes with a magnetic mount for the dash.

You can see a video of the device here.
