KENWOoD USA announced two new amplifiers with self-contained power cells specifically for electric vehicles.

Electric car sales are growing.  Yet the aftermarket hasn’t been able to fully take advantage of this growth.

KENWoOD is responding with the KAC-GS1000.1 and KAC-GS500.4 that function independently from the vehicle’s electrical system.  This solves the issue of reduced range and the need to find power sources in a complicated BUS system.

How it all works:  KENWOOD has developed two small engines- one is a 4 cycle and the other is a 2 cycle, both 20cc’s in displacement. These small engines have a 12 oz fuel tank that seals tightly to avoid spills. A small hose runs to the outside of the car for exhaust.

“When mounted in a trunk they are very difficult to hear,” said Rick Noetzli, Product manager for KENWOOd. “A small pull handle starts the Cyclic combustion Power Cell. And a small button in the front of the vehicle stops it.

“Its simplicity is its genius and its operating cost is low. We expect with today’s gas prices a typical two amp system under normal use would cost less than $250 a year,” he said.

The KAC-GS1000.1 and the KAC-GS500.4 are projected to be available in June 2022 baring any port delays at a targeted retail of $700 but the cost may be affected by any increased shipping costs, parts cost, parts availability, and/or inflation. Worst case they will be $1,200 each, said the company.

  1. really should be sold as a backup power system for electric vehicles, so when run out of power can make it off highway in limp mode.
