Kicker announced at SEMA360 a new flagship competition SPL square subwoofer, replacing the original SoloX, which was first launched in 2003.
The new L7X, due in the second quarter next year, was years in the making, weighing over 60 pounds with a power rating of 2,000 watts RMS. As other square subwoofers, it offers 20 percent more cone space for the size.
The SoloX L7X can perform well below 30Hz, and in fact, it measures some of its best performance characteristics below 30Hz, said John Myers, Senior Global Trainer for Kicker parent Stillwater Designs. The new high excursion subwoofer “will re-establish Kicker’s dominance in the woofer category,” he said.
Available in 10, 12 and 15-inch sizes, the L7X has 3 inches of excursion, triple stacked magnets, and a hyper-extended pole piece in the center of the speaker, which improves forced air cooling capabilities for higher power handling.
It has dual spiders, a thicker surround, a cast aluminum basket and square push-button terminal binding posts, and dual port 8-gauge terminal blocks. The cone is non-pressed 3mm thick paper pulp.
The SoloX L7X is expected to be priced well below the approximate $1,600 price of the original SoloX, despite the improvements including more than 50 percent more excursion.
