Sony Revives Mobile ES

Sony Electronics is bringing back the Mobile ES line with new high end speakers and subwoofers.

Back in the 1990’s Mobile ES included high end car audio lines offered through a select network of dealers. It hasn’t been produced in years, but this month the line returns with three coaxial speakers, a component 6.5-inch speaker and a 10-inch subwoofer. More products in other categories will be offered under Mobile ES in the future.

“We plan to keep the spirit of Mobile ES and it will be treated differently than our regular line,” said a Sony team member.

“These five product offerings are just the start. This is just the tip of the iceberg and we are just getting started with the Mobile ES platform,” he said.  More products will be released soon.

Crutchfield will be the only online retailer to carry the series.  “The strategy is really to embrace the independent dealers. That’s where we’ve grown in the last 10 years.  We’ve made significant growth there and this is a way to provide even more support,” he added.

The line offers a number of technical updates and hi-res audio capability.

All Mobile ES speakers have a 3-year warranty.

“Our audio engineers have designed the Mobile ES speaker lineup to give our customers a premium listening experience, without compromise,” said Daisuke Kawaguchi, Sony VP of Home Entertainment & Sound.

The products offer high design and even high end packaging, Sony said.  The company Sony will roll out “a lot of consumer marketing” and advertising for the Mobile ES line, it said.

Available in May, the Mobile ES line includes:

XS-162ES: 6 1/2″ 2-way Component Speakers
XS-160ES: 6 1/2″ 2-way Coaxial Speakers
XS-690ES: 6 x 9″ 2-way Coaxial Speakers
XS-680ES: 6 x 8” 2-way Coaxial Speakers
XS-W104ES: 10” Subwoofer

The coaxial and component speakers use a third generation of Mica Reinforced Cellular (MRC) material for the diaphragm.  It now delivers a wider frequency response and ” smoother, more natural sound characteristics,” said a Sony announcement.

The speakers use soft dome tweeters that are compatible with hi-res audio for up to 40kHz reproduction.
