SEMA360: VOXX to Ship Installed Jump Start Battery Backup

 VOXX Electronics Corporation announced it will ship this quarter a line of advanced jump start backup batteries that can be professionally installed by retailers.

Portable jump pack systems are typically stored in a glove compartment where they lose power and may prove useless when eventually needed, said VOXX.  By contrast, its Power Systems install in the car where they are continuously charged. The VOXX Power Systems also work with an app so, in the case of a dead car battery, the user can activate it without getting out of the car.

“Twenty-eight percent of drivers will experience a dead battery sometime in their driving,” said Aron Demers, Senior VP VOXX Electronics.

VOXX Power Systems were first shown at CES in January 2019, but are now due to ship before the end of the year.  VOXX said the company withheld the product due to ongoing advancements in battery technology, including protection from over-charging.

The Power Systems are designed to be installed in a vehicle’s trunk, cabin, or under the seat, connected directly to the battery, and continually charged through a custom battery charger circuit and automotive grade components that charge only when the vehicle’s engine is running.  They use a “propriety methodology to extend battery lifetime.”

The app works over Bluetooth via a smartphone, but the unit can also be manually started with a push-button.

The Power System will be available in a series that includes a 3.5 volt automotive model and a heavy-duty version for diesel engines. These will be followed by a marine, marinized model and then a smaller powersports version.   1. That was an error in the announcement. The system operates at a nominal voltage of 14v and includes a 3500mAh Lithium Ion Phosphate battery that can crank over vehicles ranging from small gas to moderate size Diesel engines. We have notified CE Outlook and they should be revising the information shortly.

  2. The stated 3.5 volts. Bill.
    Cars use a 14.4 volt system the voltages can range
    13.7 to 14.4. Is the 3.5 volts to make up the loss of power a 12 volt charged battery might have?
    3.5 volts isn’t going to heat up the lighter.

    Better get out and crank the motor over by hand like the old cars. Where in the trunk do they store the crank handle? Is that next to the fix a flat? Or the tiny compressor? Oops dead battery and flat tire your not going anyplace.

  3. Installed under a seat or in the trunk? And it looks like maybe 8 gauge output wires? Something’s not adding up here…

    1. The system includes 6 gauge leads that extend from the unit 8″. This system connects directly to the vehicle battery so the additional length and gauge needed to support a given application will depend on where the vehicle battery is located and where the system will be mounted.
