New Car Tech From Honda

Honda CES 2019

Honda is bringing new infotainment and radio technology to CES 2019.

The company will debut a system that allows users to control the car radio from their phone or tablet, a feature already available in the aftermarket.

Honda passengers will also be able to control cabin features from their phones and they may access mixed reality games, movies, and travel applications.  More details will be announced at CES, where the features will be shown in a 2019 Honda Passport.

The car maker claims that more than 2 million Honda and Acura vehicles now offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility

Also at CES, it will show a new virtual reality experience for the car, developed in conjunction with DreamWorks Animation.

If that sounds familiar it may be because Audi also announced it will reveal at CES its own in-car experience in partnership with Disney.

Honda’s virtual reality system synchronizes with the motion of the vehicle. A simpler version was actually first shown two years ago, but Honda has since added new features. All the above features are part of the new “Honda Dream Drive” experience.

Also, in audio related technology, Honda said it will demonstrate 3D audio technology that sends audio signals to each of the driver’s ears to deliver more intuitive road warnings and a “more intuitive navigation experience.”

And it will show an expanded in-car payment concept that allows customers to make restaurant reservations, pay for goods and services like fuel, movie tickets and parking, and share the driver’s location – all from Honda’s connected car “mobile wallet.”

Also on tap for CES is V2X (vehicle-to-infrastructure) technology. The company has a concept system called SAFE SWARM that includes vehicle-to-everything technology, permitting cars to “talk” to other vehicles and traffic lights and other roadway infrastructure.  Vehicles can share information such as speed and location so automated systems can determine the safest course of action. It can improve traffic flow, and help initiate early braking in an emergency

Honda first began demonstrating SAFE SWARM two years ago and has been running test trials of the technology.  It will soon conduct tests in a real world setting on the 33 Smart Mobility Corridor in Ohio, planned to become the longest stretch of continuously connected vehicle-to-infrastructure roadway in the world.

  1. Sounds like April Fools: in audio related technology, Honda said it will demonstrate 3D audio technology that sends audio signals to each of the driver’s ears to deliver more intuitive road warnings – 3D audio that actually sends audio signals to a drivers ears! What’s next?
