GM to use AR display in new Lyriq EV

A vibrant, augmented reality screen that is on the caliber of a “fighter jet” is coming to the Cadillac’s electric vehicle, the Lyriq due in March 2023.

The “retina-grade” display works at three to four times the resolution of the human eye,” said its developer Jamieson Christmas, Founder of Envisics, which is supplying the technology to Cadillac.  Christmas says the technology is comparable to a heads up display found in a commercial airline or fighter jet worth millions of dollars, according to Digital Trends.

Envisics displays are able to pack in much more information on a screen, without requiring the driver to take his eyes off the road.

Navigation becomes more precise, showing a realistic view of which lane to enter for a turn.  The difference between a private entrance and a public roadway is easier to distinguish and more precisely marked.  Road hazards are clearly shown accompanied by information that might be relevant. Pedestrian alerts are sharper.

The larger screens now seen in Tesla and other vehicles will be rendered obsolete by this holographic technology, said Digital Trends.

Where a touchscreen has to keep the user interface bare so it’s simple to use at a glance, more information can be loaded into an HUD screen because the user can keep his eyes on the road more easily.

The system resides beneath the car’s dashboard, inside the instrument cluster. It projects light through an opening aimed at the windshield.

Jaguar Land Rovers already use the first generation of this technology.
