Starting today, Amazon will deliver packages to the car.  It announced it is working with General Motors and Volvo to permit keyless entry via an app to drop off packages.

The service is free for Amazon Prime members.  Customer download the Amazon Key app, then the delivery driver unlocks the car through a remote connection. Packages can be dropped off either in the trunk or the car interior.

It works with certain 2015 or newer Chevrolet, Buick, GMC or Cadillac vehicles with an active OnStar account, and customers with 2015 or newer Volvo vehicles with an active Volvo On Call account.

Amazon plans to support other vehicles in the future.

“Unlocking Amazon Key In-Car delivery for more than 7 million Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac owners is another great example of how we are leveraging the embedded connectivity in our vehicles to provide our customers with services that make their ownership experience more valuable,” said Alan Batey, President, General Motors North America.

On delivery day, the Amazon Key App lets customers check if they’ve parked within range of the delivery location, and provides notifications with the expected 4-hour delivery time window. The App also notifies customers when the delivery is on its way, and the package has been delivered. Customers can track when their car was unlocked and relocked in the App’s activity feed, and rate their in-car delivery.

  1. Criminals will love this idea. Watch car break-in’s increase. Watch Amazon deliver your personal purchase to your vehicle while the thief, crackhead, drunk, or person in need watches and knows your not around and smashes your window and or damages more, then steals your Amazon purchase and anything else that was inside. Explain that to your insurance company. Imagine that out of pocket cost. We need to slow down on this entire “ Big Brother” change .
