Memphis Launches New Tower Speaker Tech

Memphis Audio announced a new line of tower speakers that forgo the typical compression horn tweeter in favor of a new patented system.

The speakers use a bridge for the tweeters, to free up the cone, and then include either three or four tweeters in a curved array for better sound dispersion.

The main principle behind the new the ATAC (Advanced Tweeter Array Construction) tower speakers is to provide more output and a balanced frequency response.

Standard compression horn tower speakers have a horn in the center of the woofer resulting in a less efficient woofer. The decrease in efficiency is due to the gasket that seals the gap between the woofer and the horn. The gasket adds weight to the center of the cone, negatively impacting the cone’s performance. It also reduces surface area so the woofer moves less air (so, less output).

“By using the bridged tweeter array, Memphis has freed up significant surface area on the cone and reduced a great deal of weight from the center resulting in a significant boost in SPL,” said the company. ” Instead of a single horn tweeter, the array design allows for a greater number of individual tweeters in a curved design, much like one would see in a high dispersion line array concert speaker.”

Another benefit of this design is durability.  The absence of a center mounted horn allows for a fully sealed tower speaker leaving no place for water to enter, said Memphis.

The new line represents Memphis’ first all new tower speaker in ten years.

The line includes an 8-inch, three-tweeter array design and a 10-inch, four-tweeter array design in white or a black. Both the woofer and the tweeters have RGB LED lighting.  There is an added integrated RGB LED ring around the side of the can as well as a rear RGB LED ring.

Shipping is expected in Q1 2023 with pricing to be announced at SEMA.  The speakers will be on display at SEMA in the Las Vegas Convention center, November 1-4, booth 11039.
