Pioneer Considers New Audiophile Car Audio System

Auto parts giant Continental has teamed with Pioneer Corporation to jointly create a car cockpit of the future.

Pioneer will supply infotainment “subdomains,” which to the best of our knowledge refers to infotainment features such as Bluetooth, tuners, software updates, and projection.  Continental will supply the high performance computer technology and its expertise in integrating into the vehicle.

A press release said the two companies have already begun collaborating.  It explained that until now, cars usually came with two separate information areas for two separate displays—the driver-only display and the center stack display, which could also be seen by the front passenger.  In the new digital cockpit, all displays merge and share the same overarching user interface.

This allows some of the content to be rearranged by the user. It ensures that only the information really needed at any given moment is displayed as a priority, but it allows more information overall, said Continental.

The Continental/Pioneer future cockpit will likely appear in Asian vehicles first.

Pioneer Corporation’s Naoto Takashima, head of Mobility Products said, “Continental has great expertise for instrument clusters and vehicle safety systems, which complements our strong car entertainment expertise gained through more than forty years of worldwide marketing experience in both OEM and aftermarket. They are both essential ingredients for a new level of human-machine interface that enables safe and intuitive operation for increasingly high functionality.”

  1. Won’t be long before BPEA sells or spins off the Pioneer aftermarket division as it has done with the rest of the business.
